My little Kiki has had a pretty rough week. On Wednesday night after her last walk she started acting all crazy. She was very hyperactive, she was itching all over, she was running through my clothes hanging in the closet and then she’d just go and stand in the bathroom and stare at the wall (she’s never done that before), and she couldn’t stop panting – imagine the scene from There’s Something About Mary where the dog goes all nutso (minus the violent part). We instantly knew something was seriously wrong, so we gave her 1/2 a benadryl, hopped in the car all ready to drive like speed racer to the emergency vet, but of course it was 11:30 at night before a big holiday weekend and there were cops everywhere. It turns out that Kiki was bit or stung by something outside and had a bad reaction to it. They gave her more benadryl and a small steroid shot and sent us on our way.
Kiki has a very sensitive stomach and the events of Wednesday (most likely the steroid) got her poor little tummy all flared up. Kiki started to gradually lose her appetite over the next few days and on the 4th we took her back to the vet because she had blood in her stool. They gave her injectable fluids and some meds and sent us home. A few hours later I could tell that poor little Kiki was feeling worse and worse. When she started vomiting blood we rushed her back to the ER and they decided to keep her overnight so they could get her on an IV and monitor her.
That was hands down the worst 4th of July ever because I was so upset and worried about my girl! We had planned on taking Tot and Kiki with us down to DC to watch/photograph the fireworks over the monuments, but it’s all good because there’s always next year and I am just so grateful that my baby is healing and feeling better. Isn’t it just the worst when our pets get sick? Ugh, it just tears me right up!
We picked up Kiki yesterday afternoon and were so happy to be able to bring her home. She’s doing well and feeling much better today. My little Kiki is a fighter and rest assured princess has been reeeeeeeeally spoiled since she’s come back home.
Anyways, thanks to the emergency vet and the IV, Miss Kiki is now sporting a new “do” which she will be debuting tomorrow on this very blog, so stay tuned!
