What is a Pet Photography Session like?
Pet photography sessions are fun and easy-going for everyone! My approach is very documentary in style with hardly any posing involved and no pressure. Essentially, we’ll meet up at your home or the location of your choice, then we might start out with a walk, followed by some of your favorite daily activities together. I’ll snap shots along the way of everything – moments of excitement, happiness, action and silliness, to more quiet and sentimental moments filled with hugs and kisses. It’s all about capturing the love.
I aim to capture the real you! I believe that real smiles don’t originate by saying “cheese,” rather they happen during the types of moments that you want to bottle up forever – those are the moments I love to capture! I sometimes ask my clients to ‘just be’ with their pets like they would usually if they were relaxing at home curled up on the couch and pretend that I’m not even there.
Every session is different and takes into account each client’s personal vision as well as the personality and energy level of your pets.
What is on-location Pet Photography?
On-location photography is a luxury service that I provide to my clients who select Standard Sessions and Great Dane Sessions. On-location means that I come to you, it means that your pets will be more comfortable and relaxed on their own turf, it means more time with your precious family, not battling DC Metro traffic and will save you several hours out of your busy day!
What happens if it is raining or cloudy on our session date?
Contrary to conventional wisdom, cloudy days and partially cloudy days are just as great as sunny days for photography. If it looks like the weather might be iffy (snow, rain, etc…) I will be in touch and we can decide if it is best to play it by ear or just reschedule. It’s always easy to reschedule if need be.
Do you photograph family portraits with pets, if so are your rates different?
I photograph casual family portraits with pets for my regular session fees.
Where would we have the session?
It’s completely up to you! Your session will take place at your home or the location of your choice. If you are unsure then I would recommend choosing a place that has special meaning to you and your pet, whether it be your home, a local park, perhaps you like to take daily walks together in the city or on a trail? The more familiar the surroundings are for your pets, the more comfortable and relaxed they will be. If you don’t want your session in and around your home, I have a countryside location in Northern Virginia that I would recommend.
Will you photograph my kids and my pets together?
Absolutely! If your kiddos and pets share a truly special loving bond, I would love to capture it!
Are any prints or products included in your Session Fee?
No, there are no prints, products or Digital Negatives included in my Session Fee.
Do you sell Digital Negatives?
I do! Most of my clients like to purchase the Digital Negatives from their session. Digital Negatives are for personal use only and copyright will remain solely with Photography by Sara Riddle.
What the heck are Digital Negatives anyway?
A Digital Negative is a large image file that my camera records onto a memory card that is then uploaded to my computer and edited.
What time of day would my session be?
All pet photography sessions take place in the late afternoon (because it is the best and more flattering light of the day).
What if I don’t want to be in the photos, do you photograph pets without people?
I wouldn’t want you to do anything you wouldn’t be comfortable with. It is absolutely up to you how many photos you want to be in. Some people want to be in almost every photo with their pets, some only want to be in a few – or none at all. It’s your call!
What if my pet isn’t well trained?
Your pet might not respond to every command the first time, the first ten times – or ever – but you have to trust me on this, it’s fine! In fact, it is completely normal! I promise! I want to capture you, your pet and your family just as you are. The goal is not to be perfect, but to capture your pet just as they are. Whether your pet is a perfect angel, mischievous diva or a total goofball, I want to capture the real them. The best way to let your pet’s personality shine through is to let them relax and be themselves without any pressure from you or me.
Will you photograph my horse?
I’d love the opportunity! A horse session is essentially the same as a Pet Photography Session, but I will meet you where you board your horse (or the location of your choice) and I will ask you to go about your normal routine with them – from brushing them to giving them carrots, to saddling them up and riding, etc… I might direct you every now and then to keep you in the best lighting. I will guide/pose you once in a while, but for the most part I will be like a fly on the wall.
What should I wear?
I would recommend first and foremost something that reflects your true personality – whether it be urban, punk rock, funky, fun, conservative, chic, blue jean casual, sporty etc… I would suggest staying away from white and busy clothing patterns. Your shoes will most likely be in a good amount of photos, so wear a pair you wouldn’t mind seeing in your images. Cool Converse, cute ballet flats, clogs, heels, flip flops, sneakers – it’s all good, just make sure that you love them and that they reflect who you are! I’ve secretly always thought that Dorothy’s ruby red slippers would be a fun choice!
Are you available for commercial pet photography?
Yes, please email me directly for more information and my commercial rates.
What is the best time of year to book a pet photography session?
Autumn and spring are my busiest times of year for good reason, they are the most gorgeous times of year with the most comfortable temperatures.
Have a Q and can’t find the A? No worries! Simply email Sara, she’ll be happy to answer any questions you might have.
